In the Midwest foundation problems are often a result of hydraulic pressure caused by ground water pushing against the wall, or up from the floor. The expansion and contraction of our clay soil is also a common problem as we move from wet seasons through dry seasons and back again. Foundation repairs should usually be coupled with an effort to divert water away from the foundation as much as possible.
This article will address the repair of the crack but not the repair of the causation. Professional foundation repair can be very costly, but with a little hard work and some basic materials many cracks can be repaired by a fairly handy person with any of the repair kits currently available to the public. Most of the kits contain a 2 part epoxy system that is injected into the crack under pressure and a finishing epoxy that is used to dress and cover the repair. The video below will show you the process as recommended by Crack-Pac.
